On November 28, 2018, NASA held a press conference announcing the nine eligible American companies selected to assist in CLPS delivery services to the moon. These services, called Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contracts, mark the first phase of humanity’s greater effort toward the exploration of the Moon and onward to Mars.

The importance of this announcement represents a follow through with the President’s Space Policy Directive 1, to partner with commercial industry, therefore sharing the cost, risk, and acheivement with the several agencies and industries. We are going to the Moon, and this time we mean it.  These companies will deliver payloads of science and technology onto the Moon’s surface for NASA’s missions. It is implied that NASA will be but one of many agencies making use of CLPS contracts, opening the gateway to other entities to push the boundaries of human endeavor.

The press conference took place at NASA headquarters, with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine hosting the event and introducing representatives from each company.
